Can Reflexology help with menopause symptoms?

can reflexology help menopause symptoms

There have been a number of different clinical research trials to see if Reflexology can help with menopausal symptoms including those awful hot flushes, night sweats and low mood that can be overwhelming. And I’m so pleased to report that reflexology has benefitted ladies with menopausal symptoms.

In one research study[1], 120 women between the ages of 40-60 were split between two groups. One group had foot reflexology, while the other group had non-specific foot massages. Both groups saw an improvement in their symptoms, but those in the reflexology group saw a more significant and speedy improvement. How amazing is that! And it goes to show that reflexology is more than just a foot massage!

Due to the hormonal changes during menopause, according to the NHS, women can feel anxious, stressed, irritable or depressed. In another research study[2], they studied 90 women who were experiencing menopausal symptoms and depression. 45 of these women had 30 minutes of foot reflexology twice a week for 6 weeks. The other 45 women had normal clinical care. The results of the study showed that those women who had the 30 minutes of reflexology, twice a week for 6 weeks had an improvement in their depression scores during and after the study. However, a third study[3] in the UK found that receiving both reflexology and non-specific foot massages had similar benefits and they couldn’t see a big difference between both groups (both did have benefits at reducing psychological and physical symptoms of menopause though).

So does Reflexology help menopause symptoms? The majority of the research certainly suggests it does. I wanted to make sure I did a balanced search and blog post so searched for both positive and less positive research. There are some research studies to say it is more beneficial than non-specific massage, but others where the results are not so clear. However, no matter what, the research suggests that having Reflexology is better than having nothing at all, when it comes to supporting women through the menopause.
