Can Reflexology Bring on Labour?

This is a question I get asked a lot is can reflexology bring on labour? The honest answer is… maybe, for some people!

Reflexology can’t guarantee to bring on labour (if it did, reflexologists would be very rich!). But many people find it helpful, and I’ve had some clients tell me they went into labour not long after their session. In fact, midwives often recommend giving reflexology a go when you’re pregnant.

How Can Reflexology Help?

While I can’t promise reflexology will start labour, what I can say is that relaxation plays a big part in preparing your body for birth. Being calm and relaxed is believed to help your body release oxytocin. That’s the hormone that’s key in kick-starting and progressing labour. Reflexology is amazing for helping you feel grounded, calm, and supported during pregnancy.

Tailoring Reflexology for Pregnancy

Throughout pregnancy, I adapt my reflexology routines depending on what trimester you’re in to make sure you’re getting the right kind of support. Once you reach 40 weeks, I’ll switch things up and use a different routine designed to encourage relaxation and help your body prepare for labour. This involves working on points linked to hormones, the pelvis, and other areas that may encourage things to get moving (if your body is ready!).

The Bottom Line

Reflexology isn’t a magic solution for everyone wanting to go into labour soon. But it can be a lovely way to feel calm, cared for, and ready for birth. If you’re feeling anxious or tense as your due date approaches, it’s a gentle, relaxing treatment. It can help you feel more positive and balanced — and that’s never a bad thing!

(P.S. I had reflexology all the way through my pregnancy, so I practice what I preach)
