If you’ve heard of reflexology but aren’t quite sure what it is, don’t worry—you’re not alone! It is the lesser known sister of baby massage. It’s a great natural sleep remedy for babies or toddlers! In fact, it’s my passion to make it better known, so I have created The Reflexology Mummy to share helpful video guides for all busy parents.
Reflexology is a gentle therapy that involves applying light pressure to specific areas on the feet, hands or face. For little ones I tend to stick to feet because it’s easier with a wriggly baby or toddler. These areas, called reflex points (sometimes also known as pressure points), are believed to correspond to different parts of the body. It’s a natural way to promote relaxation and balance in your baby or toddler.
Why Is Reflexology Great for Babies and Toddlers?
Babies and toddlers, like all of us, can feel stress or distress, especially when they’re teething, growing, or just having trouble winding down. Reflexology is a safe, gentle way to help them relax, which can be a game-changer for sleep. (I know this from using it own my own daughter and other babies who come into my clinic)
The best part? Babies love the soothing touch! Whether it’s part of their bedtime routine or a calming moment during the day, reflexology helps them settle down, making it easier for them to drift off and sleep more soundly. It’s also a wonderful bonding experience for mummy/daddy and baby.
How Does It Work for Sleep?
When we work on specific reflex points linked to relaxation and the nervous system, we help calm the body. Reflexology can also be great for helping with discomfort from digestion or teething, which can often be the reason little ones wake up. By promoting calmness and reducing discomfort, reflexology can help set the stage for a good night’s sleep.
